As I said on my “Possible causes” page, even though the exact cause is unknown, most likely it was caused by cold air and wind on a Sunday afternoon, 16th February 2014. This part is detailed on the “Possible causes” page.
Here is a short log of my progress:
Day 1 (17th February 2014)
I noticed a mild pain on the left side of my neck in the evening.
I noticed a pain around my ear as well and hearing sounds louder around 12 o’clock. My eyes begin to be dry at 17 o’clock and I also noticed an inflamed face sensation. I was still able to blink and move my face.
The doctor diagnosed Full paralysis (severe case) at 11 AM, extremely dry eyes, dropped face, ear pain and loss of taste sensation on the left side.
I can’t move any muscle on the left side of my face. I think that it’s a bit worst than yesterday, my eye is drying out very quickly, I had to apply artificial tears 5-6 times a day. First physiotherapy session, they didn’t see such a severe case for a long time …
No change at all … Difficult to talk, to eat, to drink. I think my eye is the most embarrassing in this disease. I can’t use it at all, I’m not able to look at my phone with it while I’m writing a message. I have to apply 2-3 drops of artificial tears if I don’t cover it, so I see blurry the whole day.
Probably improved a little bit today. Somehow I feel a little bit better and my lower lip looks a bit more straight. Although I still can’t move any muscle on the left side of my face.
I will illustrate my progress in percentage for different muscles. For example 20% smile means a very weak smile, at least I can move it little bit
I’m feeling better, I think corticotherapy already started to reduce the inflammation. My eyelid begun to move when I look down/up. I reduced a bit the need for eye drops. I still can’t see any improvement on my face. Eating and drinking is very difficult as I can’t open my mouth properly and the food get stuck by my cheek. I’m already very tired around 18 o’clock
I’m starting to have slight tingling on my face. A noticed a slight pain only on the left side of my face during the facial massage at physiotherapy. They said that this is a positive pain, it means that my face will begin to come back … yeeey I thought that I can close my eyes, but I was rolling up my eyes They told me to look down when closing my eyes, unfortunately was not able to do it.
Almost constant tingling on my face, which means that nerves starting to communicate again. I still feel the pain during the facial massage at physiotherapy. I was shocked when I arrived home and looked in the mirror. I noticed a tiny movement when trying to lift my face. This is the FIRST TIME I can make a tiny tiny little movement with my left face. Even if I realized that complete recovery might still be quite slow, I was sure that I’m able to make good progress now.
Everybody noticed the improvement, my face doesn’t have that severe dropped look now. Although I can’t smile at all, can’t blink, can’t eat properly, I feel much better.
Noticeable improvements: my lips getting better, I can drink much easier. I can independently close my eyes … with a lot of effort. I don’t experience pain in my ear anymore … but still hearing loud sounds louder sometimes. The taste on the left side of my tongue came back. Easier to hold water in mouth.
Day 13 – 14
A tiny smile appeared Unfortunately I still can’t blink at all, so I have to use artificial tears 3-4 times a day.
Day 15 – 17
Huge improvements on my face. I can almost control every muscle but I can’t hold facial expressions for long.
The doctor confirmed the great improvements, my face almost 50% recovered.
Day 19 – 21
Great improvements, I can hold eye shut independently for longer periods, but still can’t blink and I need to use artificial tears, although the tear duct begun to work.
Day 22 – 26
My physiotherapist noticed that even if my face is 50% recovered, some parts are far behind. We’ve discovered that my nose can’t move at all, the muscles around the eye are still noticeably weaker. My wrinkles are only ~25% visible, also my eyelid moves only 25% when blinking. The muscles around the mouth are also noticeably weaker. We dedicated this week to this areas mostly.
Concentrating on muscles around eye and mouth is having visible effects. I can shut my eye independently for long periods. Wrinkles are more visible, blinking was also improved a little bit and my nose also started to move a little.
I was at the doctor today, she was very happy because I’m overall 70% recovered, although the muscles around eyes, nose and mouth are behind. She said that it was a severe case, so the progress is very good.
Day 31 – 37
Started working 4 hours/day. I can’t work more because blinking and tear duct still not fully recovered. This week the improvements were very small.
Day 38 – 41
Visible improvements over the weekend, my wrinkles are almost fully visible. My nose and upper lip also improved a bit. I started to work normally, 8 hours/day from Monday. My tear duct is fully recovered, I just have to take care to close my eyes at least once a minute, because blinking still not working.
First day I can whistle a little bit again … yeeeey 😀
Day 48 (5. April 2014)
I can now whistle a song almost clearly. Here is my current progress:
Day 59 (16. April 2014)
My face is almost 90% recovered, nobody can notice any difference between my left and right side of my face.
Unfortunately my blinking is still weak and the main problem is that my affected eye opens up a bit when sleeping so I still have to use eye gel to protect it from drying out. The eye-gel recommended by my ophthalmologist is called Cornegel. She said that I have to use it for 1 month at least.
Day 75 (2. May 2014)
In the last 2 weeks, I decided to strengthen my eye muscles, because my blinking was very weak. I had a great improvement, my blinking is ~ 70% recovered. It still didn’t close completely but it keeps my eye wet now even when the weather is windy. Unfortunately, my face is blocked now at 90% recovery, I don’t see any improvements for the last 2 weeks. Maybe I will start to do some exercises again, hope will help …
Day 97 (24. May 2014)
Great news ! I have improved a lot this month, my eye doesn’t open up after I fall asleep. I was at the doctor as well and she confirmed that I’m more than 90% recovered but I still need some tiny improvements, especially on my upper lip. I’m sooo happy, it took around 100 days to recover almost completely To improve from 80% to ~90% took almost 1 month. Let’s see if I will completely recover in 1 month.
Day 119 (15. June 2014)
I was on a final control. I’m 95% recovered, my blinking is almost perfect and my eye doesn’t open up at all when sleeping. Now nobody can recognize that I ever had Bell’s Palsy.
What the remaining 5% recovery means ? I still feel a little pain on my neck after I go out in windy and cold weather. But the most annoying thing is that my left eye waters all time I start eating. At the beginning a thought that it is because of hot or spicy food, but in short time I’ve noticed that it doesn’t matter what kind of food I’m eating. My left eye starts watering even if I eat a banana … The doctor said that I still need a few months to fully recover.
